Shake 263: On the eleventh day of Christmas…

December 24, 2010

Diem, Melbourne (Victoria), year?

…eleven pipers piping, ten lords a-leaping, nine ladies dancing, eight maids a-milking, seven swans a-swimming, six geese a-laying, five golden rings, four calling birds, three French hens, two turtledoves and a partridge in a pear tree.

The birthdays in my family are just unbelievable. And I’m not joking. Our birthdays all fall around Christmas and three days in a row. What were my parents celebrating in March? Don’t ask.

Christmas and our birthdays all melded into one big celebration, and growing up without much in the way of material possessions, we didn’t expect much during the festive season. However, one particular Christmas remains tucked away in a special place in my memory. My father’s friend, who had left his three daughters and wife behind in his motherland to make a new life for them in Australia, came by our house with not one but three birthday cakes one Christmas Eve.

Happy birthday Andie! Time to celebrate with some cocktails tonight eh?
