Shake 65: Casting snowdomes

June 8, 2010

Hilda, Hong Kong, Year?

How cute is the lil birdie on top?

I managed to watch Peter Jackson’s The Lovely Bones and it was difficult to get past the first scene – he had cast none other than a snowdome. This made me start thinking about other famous domes.

Here are a couple of other examples in film:

  1. Citizen Kane: probably a snowdome’s most famous appearance, at the deathbed of Kane. I’ve had this on dvd for years but have yet to watch this classic.
  2. Unfaithful: an evil dome – used as an implement to kill a lover. Lucky the dome hasn’t been typecast.
  3. Knick Knack: Pixar’s short film (screened just prior to Finding Nemo in the theatres) about a snowman trying to escape his dome to get to the Sunny Miami knick knack. Almost everyone I knew was raving about this short film, which meant I was sitting in the theatre a lot faster than even I had expected.

They’ve also been popping up in graphic novels and tv, but I think that’s enough trivia for today.
